The Texas Irlen Association provides Quarterly Zoom Meetings for members. This one was not only of interest to Irlen Screeners and Diagnosticians, but to parents and teachers! Topic was how to create an Irlen Friendly Classroom with Marge Harris as facilitator. If you are not already a member please enroll using the 'Membership' section of our website in order to attend the Quarterly Zoom Meetings.
Making accommodations for Irlen students (and teachers!) can be quick and easy. The top suggestions, at the meeting, were 'low- tech' but effective.

- no lights if the classroom has windows or use half the lights
- lamps in the room if possible
- filters over the light fixtures if the fire marshal allows it
- use lower brightness of paper, for example 92 brightness
- use www.printablepaper.net for templates for notebook paper and graph paper if non-traditional colors of paper are needed
- turn down brightness on interactive whiteboards
- use colored backgrounds and pens on interactive whiteboards but give students permission to say that a color doesn’t work for them
- allow earbuds/headphones during work time to block distractions
- allow visors or caps in the classroom
- do not seat suspected Irlen students directly under fluorescent lights
- let them know that computers, tablets, and phones have accessibility features which allow them to change the background color
Quarterly TIA Meeting - Tuesday, April 19, 7pm 2022
It was great to meet fellow Irlen practitioners at April’s Quarterly Zoom meeting. Topic was “What can we learn from Helen Irlen’s Story? How can we promote the Irlen Method and keep inspired?”
We discussed the excitement that Helen felt when she found out how to help the adult learners and how we see dramatic changes ourselves during screenings and tinting sessions. All of that keeps us motivated and inspired and not afraid to spread awareness!

TIA Conference - January 22, 2022
The 25th Anniversary Conference of the Texas Irlen Association took place on 22nd January 2022. It was well attended, and the option of attending in person or by Zoom appealed to people living in Texas and beyond. The venue was unique – Lone Star Flight Museum in Houston – and the included tour was fascinating as we explored the development and use of historic planes. The tour guide particularly thanked the attendees for their commitment to changing the lives of children.
The presentations at the Conference allowed us to develop our skills and knowledge further, and the theme of ‘More Than Just Reading’ explored current trends in Public Education, Irlen difficulties unique to math and music, and the use of assistive technology. Keynote speakers Helen Irlen and Sandra Tosta attended via Zoom and brought both charm and experience to the event. Helen particularly encouraged people to involve parents fully in the Irlen Screening process and Sandra ‘went down a rabbit hole’ when she explored the myriad of conditions that showed Irlen symptoms and that could be alleviated by color. What a wonderful tool we have and what a wonderful experience of networking we had at the conference – It both renewed us and made us more determined to spread Irlen awareness. Please join the Texas Irlen Association and help us with that mission.
